Hachi Hachi Bistro: Sushi, Feelings, and a Potion No. 8 (Surabaya)
6:09 PMI got sick, disappeared for a few days, and came back with… sushi cravings and a personality reboot. Classic me. My friends don’t like raw food (rip my social life), so I dragged my sister to Hachi Hachi Bistro in Tunjungan Plaza, Surabaya.Yes, the one dangerously near Sushi Tei like a chaotic side quest.
Vibe check (aka do I belong here?)
Bright, buzzy, and fusion-forward. It’s giving “first date where you claim you’re chill but secretly have a spreadsheet of roll preferences.”
What we ordered (and how it felt)
Philadelphia Roll
Cream cheese inside. My inner purist said “hmm,” but my mouth said “okay, fine.” Not my forever roll, but we’ve texted.
Black Dragon Roll
Ebi + tobiko + unagi (be still my eel-loving heart). Crunchy, rich, charismatic. This roll pays taxes and remembers birthdays.
Fried Cajun Calamari
I’m squid-biased and this delivered. Crisp jacket, tender inside. Perfect palate break when your heart says “more” and your stomach says “why.”
Drinks (matcha-coded coping)
Potion No. 8 (matcha + blended cookies & cream + cream on top)
Dessert in a cup; bold, sweet, absolutely extra. Me in beverage form. Favorite.
Iced Green Jelly
Lighter, jellier, citrus note on top. Good if Potion sounds like too much commitment.
Damage: -IDR 157,000 for everything we inhaled.
Normal tea’s around IDR 10,000 if you’re behaving.
What to order if you’re me
Get Black Dragon (must).
Add a safe roll (Philly, if you’re cheese-curious).
One fried side (Calamari) for crunch therapy.
Potion No. 8 if you want a sweet hug; Iced Green Jelly if you want boundaries.
Sushi Tei = classic, predictable.
Hachi Hachi = fusion, playful, a little “who am I today?”
Both have their moment; today I chose chaos and cream.
Practical bits
Where: Tunjungan Plaza, Surabaya
(Hachi Hachi Bistro also pops up in Jakarta, sadly not in Bali my tragedy arc continues).
I came for sushi, I stayed because the unagi understood me. If you see a girl sipping Potion No. 8 like it’s character development, say hi.
I’ll probably recommend the Black Dragon and pretend I’m not romantic about seaweed.
Anyway. I’m fine. (The eel helped.)
