Warung Kecil Sanur, Big Happy (Budget bites in Sanur)

1:29 AM

Bali has a new café every time I blink.

Cute? yes.
Affordable? …not always.

I’m Team Under-70K: I want food that fills my tummy and my feelings without sending my wallet to the ER. So I went hunting for somewhere cozy, tasty, and kind to student budgets.

Enter: Warung Kecil (literally “small eatery”), Sanur

I usually hunt in Seminyak or Kuta. Today I made a different decision: Sanur. I’ve only ever stopped for The Porch and a Massimo cone. That’s the sum of my expertise.

Tripadvisor handed me Warung Kecil. A narrow gang, easy to miss unless you notice the quiet current of people slipping inside. Small room, warm air, a wall of paperbacks pretending to be a library. Staff who remember faces. Takeaways without plastic: orderly, almost principled.

It isn’t trying to impress, it just works.
That’s its charm.

Why it’s popular (my theory):

  • Indonesian and Western menus that actually taste fresh
  • Staff who are sweet without hovering
  • Prices that don’t make you cry into your ocha
  • We were… not quiet.

Sorry to everyone who met our volume level that day 😅

What we ate (and why I’d order it again)

  • Nasi Campur: from 23K (Paket B)

White rice or nasi merah (red/brown). Pick a packet or point at the sides you want; price scales with greediness. Fresh, simple, satisfying. If you’re pinching rupiah, Paket B at 23K is the move.

  • “Egg Style” Breakfast, 20K

The waiter asked “poached, boiled, scrambled…?” and my Indonesian soul said, “telur dadar aja.”

Judge me later.
It hits.

  • Chicken Rucola Panini, 33K

Chicken, rucola, cheese, mayo, pesto on a crunchy-soft panini. Veg-forward flavor (slightly bitter rucola), so pick this if you like greens. Good, but…

  • BLT Panini (Bacon Lettuce Tomato) 33K

…this is the one. Smoky, salty, crispy, cheesy. The panini texture is perfect: light crunch outside, soft inside. Soulmate sandwich.

  • Asian Noodle Soup (5:30 PM–close) 35K

Curry-style broth (Thai lean, a little sour), noodles, egg, tauge, coriander, shrimp. Unexpectedly my favorite slurp of the day. Comforting without being heavy.

  • Lime Pie 25K

Tart, bright, not too sweet. We committed a small delicious crime and ate it with bits of Toblerone. No regrets

What we paid (5 people)

Food + cake + chaos = 223K total. Tax already included.
For a Bali café with nice vibes? That’s… kind of iconic.

Notes & tiny tips
  • Ordering nasi campur: price depends on what you add; ask for Paket A/B if you want a fixed, cheaper set.
  • Rice choice: white or nasi merah (red/brown). I’d pick nasi merah for extra texture.
  • Crowd: lots of travelers; go early lunch or late afternoon to snag a seat.
  • Wi-Fi: yes. Plastic: nope (eco-friendly packaging for takeaways).
  • Ambience: small, cozy, dimmer in spots (phone cameras suffer), but the library wall is cute.

Verdict

“Warung” name, café energy. Cheap but not cheap-tasting. Friendly service, fresh food, and options for both nasi warriors and sandwich people.

I’d go back for the BLT and the curry noodles, to prove that “budget” and “nice hangout” can be the same sentence.
